CELEBRATION OF INDEPENDENTS
On 4th July America will celebrate Independence Day, however here in Birmingham they've decided to dedicate an entire month to celebrating the hidden gems of the city, our fantastic selection of independents retailers! On 8th July here in the Great Western Arcade we will be taking part in the Celebration of Independents Fashion Show and are featured in the first of Stylebirmingham's profiles on Independent retailers. And to help celebrate we are offering customers 25% summer discount off all stock in-store, so grab those bargains while it lasts!

STUDENTS EXHIBITION
We will be showcasing an exhibition of "BA Design for Industry" students work from Birmingham City University. This latest collection of work has been created using laser technology, which offers designers exciting new opportunities and has inspired the students to develop unique and individual products in precious materials. As a graduate from the School of Jewellery myself, I am well aware of the value of such opportunities and am pleased to offer my support. Pop along and let us know what you think of these up and coming graduates.

THE STYLE AWARDS
We're certainly brimming over with excitement after being shortlisted in the Jewellery & Accessories and Most Stylish Independent catagories for Birmingham's most stylish shops, bars and venues for this year's Style Awards 2009. The awards take place at The Town Hall on 22nd October, and the honours will crown the places and people keeping the city at the height of the fashion game.

OXFORD SUMMER SCHOOL
This year I have been sponsored by Retail Birmingham to attend the Oxford Summer School, Keble College on a retail awareness programme. The School is designed to expose delegates to some of the problems, decisions and challenges involved in running a business. The programme concentrates on enhancing the delegate's expertise in the management of key resourses such as people, money, marketing, merchandising and retail space. Wish me luck, think I'll need it!

CELEBRATION OF INDEPENDENTS
Birmingham celebrates the vital role played by its independent stores with a series of events across the city. Throughout the summer, shoppers are encouraged to go out and explore Birmingham's stores and beautiful arcades. The hope is that the outdoor photographic exhibition and the Independent Retailers Guide will encourage shoppers to support the passionate individuals who help create a special and distinctive experience in our city. There will also be a Fashion Showcase evening to be staged at the Radisson SAS hotel and feature collections from some of Birmingham's leading independents retailers including jewellery from Helen Hulston.

STYLE AWARDS
Following the success of the inaugural Retail Birmingham Style awards last year, they are back and we have been nominated for a Style Award in "Birmingham’s most stylish Independent retailer" category organised by Retail Birmingham. The winners will be chosen by the public, through online voting and the announcement will take place at a glitzy awards ceremony to be held at the Town Hall, Birmingham on October 23rd.

A GLITTERING EVENT
We held an exhibition of contemporary jewellery by award winning Birmingham Designer Fei Liu. Guests were invited to the launch of the exhibition on 6th September where they had the opportunity to meet the designer. We were one of only a handful of exclusive retailers in the country, alongside The Talisman Gallery in Harvey Nichols, London and The Goldsmiths’ Fair in London chosen to host the touring exhibition. The exhibition marked our third anniversary.

RETAIL BID
Recognising how important it is for Independents to have a voice, I joined the Board for the Retail Business Improvement District. This initiative is where businesses have joined forces to fund improvements in the area and was launched in April 2007. As independents are becoming lost within multiples, I think this kind of investment is what a major city needs and therefore give it my full support.
